The Fireworks Extravaganza has been running in Woking Park for over 20 years. It is presented by Woking District Rotary Club, an active community organisation with about 45 members. Over the years it has raised many £000’s all of which have been used to support worthwhile charities and other causes which Rotarians carefully select each year.

Around 75% of funds raised are spent in the local community in and around Woking.

During the last two years we have supported the following organisations and charities locally:

Let’s Read, Link Able, Surrey Young Carers, Surrey Search and Rescue, West Surrey Relate, White Lodge, Woking CAP Job Club, Woking ShopMobility, Woking Street Angels, York Road Project, Your Sanctuary, Railway Children, Mobility Trust, McMillan Cancer Support, Children In Need, Citizen Advice Woking, The Lighthouse Woking, CAP Debt Club, GASP Motor Project, Parkinsons, and “Little Roo” neo-natal Intensive Care unit at St Peter’s Hospital (Chertsey).

In addition, we have a programme of support provided to eight local primary schools and two special needs schools aimed at the most vulnerable children in Woking:

  1. gearing money to primary schools for starting up breakfast clubs,
  2. reading material for those schools that have a high proportion of children with English as a second language
  3. providing money for children to go on Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

and we have helped to fund a new Youth Centre Project to get youths off the streets after school.

The remaining 25% of funds raised is used to support various worthwhile international projects in less developed countries. Currently we are supporting projects in Nepal and South Africa, as well as End Polio Now. Recently we completed construction of a sand dam in a remote part of Kenya. In recent years we have donated three Shelterboxes for use in international disaster areas.

Rotarians also give their time to support local community based organisations, an example of which is Woking Foodbank.
